William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French painter. He was a traditionalist and a symbolist heavily influenced by the Western mystical tradition then sweeping Europe in the late 19th century. His incredible paintings are, apart from displaying incredible mastery and technique, also filled with symbolism which the trained student in mythology and esotericism can easily pick out.
