Dirt Hand ::: Dirt Hand

There are very few current musicians from Australia that excite me. Sure the country is rich in 'underground' music history but in the many years that I lived in Australia there were only a handful of musicians that really made me sit up and take notice.  So it is with great delight that I came across Dirt Hand, a wonderful talent from Brisbane.  There is something unique and memorable about the sound; with brooding vocals and slow blues, rock, country, swamp and even ritual overtones. The whole EP draws you in from the start with its laid back simplicity (at times almost cabaret-like in its reach). Yes, I'll just come out and say it, I am in love with this EP.

The sound of Dirt Hand has an almost Matt Elliott feel with a Bain Wolfkind noir appeal and yet it manages to remain completely original. It's dark and yet uplifting.  It's sorrowful and yet you find yourself tapping along to its distinct clapping percussion. Hard to pick a favorite song but since Little Bird just keeps coming out from my speakers over and over, I guess you could say that I have a bit of a thing for it. If you are looking for music that will take you in and have you gasping with interest then you really owe it to yourself to get this EP now.

Bain Wolfkind ::: Lone Wolf

Matt Elliott ::: The Broken Man

The Broken Man is a brawny, robust album, the type of record that carries an uncommon weight and honesty. When Elliott darkly intones, "this is how it feels to be alone," on "Dust, Flesh and Bones", there's complete conviction in his dead-eyed delivery, conveying an unwavering faith in his emotional regression. In lesser hands it's a line that could read as trite; with Elliott it feels well-worn, as though it's been churning around his head for years, gathering emotional baggage with the passing of time. But this isn't just a highly crafted plummet to the depths. There's an eerie, unearthly sense of displacement to much of the material, such as the spindly cries of bowed saw (or something simulating the sound of one) on "How to Kill a Rose". Those atmospheric touches make this feel like Elliott's most complete work to date, forming a vital link between his sunless balladry and the shattered electronica of Third Eye Foundation.

Matt Elliott ::: Drinking songs

Marinated in café piano, mournful strings, and delicate guitar, Drinking Songs follows as Elliott draws further inspiration from Eastern European folk and cabaret music, his stately compositions achieving a melancholic drama similar to Tom Waits or the Bad Seeds at their most theatrically downtrodden. What frequently sets Elliott apart, however, are his cascading, impressionistic vocals, as on the sanguine "The Guilty Party", where his layered voices recede almost imperceptibly into the background until barely distinguishable from the rest of his quietly nodding solo orchestra.  An  unsettling and wonderful collection.

Bain Wolfkind ::: Music For Lovers & Gangsters

Despite musical roots dating back to 1988 and involvement in numerous groups, Bain Wolfkind did not truly emerge until 2004.

In 2004 Wolfkind recorded the self produced ‘Love Letters’ EP, followed by 2005’s full length release ‘Music For Lovers and Gangsters’, 2006’s ‘Confidential Report’ EP , 2007’s ‘Wasteland’ EP and 2008’s, his most recent full length Cd release, ‘The Swamp Angel’ .

The music of Bain Wolfkind could be described as a minimalised and post-industrialised version of artists like Lee Hazlewood. The lyrical content draws heavily from Crime Fiction, Blues, Country and B grade Americana.While primarily a solo project, in the singer songwriter vein, Bain Wolfkind involves many guest musicians in the studio and guitarists for live performances.
