Michael Smith and Michael Lauter met in the fall of 1988 while attending Colorado State University. Sharing common interest in films and artists like Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly, they began collaborating on music under the moniker "Creeping Eruption". By the summer of 1991, they were performing live at clubs across the Colorado Front Range area.
When Michael Lauter departed in 1993, he was replaced by James Schrecengost on drums and Andrea DiNapoli of Venus Walk on keyboards. The change in lineup prompted Michael Smith to retitle the band "Fiction 8". By 1996, the band's lineup had changed again, with David DeVoe of New Ben Franklins taking over on guitar and Steven Hart of Monastery on keyboards. A prior appearance on The Cyberflesh Conspiracy CD compilation brought them to the attention of Seba Dolimont of Side-Line Music Magazine, who helped the band secure its first record deal with Discordia Records. A subsequent album, Spirits, was released on Trinity Records, again with Seba's help.
